WE DEMAND JUSTICE FOR COMMUNITIES, STUDENTS, AND STAFF DAMAGED BY BP’S OIL SPILL IN THE GULF OF MEXICO We below stand with the AFT nation to support efforts to assist teachers, school staff, and students affected by the oil spill. AFT members across the state of Alabama support State Superintendent Dr. Joseph Morton who filed a complaint against British Petroleum (BP) to recoup education funding that will be lost because of the consequences on the economy from the oil spill. AFT affiliates across this state will work with community and education organizations, school boards, civic groups, politicians, faith based groups, civil rights leaders, foundations and the business community to support the efforts to protect our schools and our students from the impact of the BP oil spill. Revenues are needed to fund education in Alabama classrooms. The oil spill has already hurt businesses through the loss of tourism and revenues from seafood exports. Alabama schools will receive less funding from the state unless BP fills the gap. Children will be without the supplies, materials and equipment they will need to compete in a global economy.
AFT is also concerned about the health effects on the children of Alabama and those citizens living near the coasts where the damage has been done. AFT is asking all environmental and governmental groups to join together to study and report the effects the oil spill may have on children and their families. Additionally, AFT affiliates want the Alabama Legislature to pass OSHA and other regulations to protect students and workers in our schools. This petition will be forwarded to all state leaders, including Governor Riley, President Obama and members of Congress. Please support AFT’s effort to help Alabama’s students.
